Threads


There are so many different threads on the market, with different weights and composition. There is a thread to suit every project and every sewer.

Types of thread

  • Cotton thread 
  • Elastic thread such as shirring elastic
  • Polyester thread also known as all purpose thread
  • Upholstery thread for heavy duty use
  • Denim thread  for stitching denim e.g. jeans
  • Metallic thread for decorative stitching
  • Silk thread for delicate stitching on silk
  • Nylon and rayon thread such as invisible thread 

The type of sewing thread that you use depends on your project.

Sewing thread types and their uses

  • Cotton - all purpose thread used for all kinds of sewing projects.
  • Polyester / cotton - this is a multi purpose thread and is suitable for all fabrics including stretch fabrics.
  • Embroidery - this thread can be split into strands for embroidery. There are usually 6 strands that can be divided.
  • Quilting thread - this is coated with a waxed finish that allows for easy movement through quilting layers.
  • Wool thread - this is used for embroidery and blankets. there is also tapestry wool.
  • Invisible thread - this is used when you want an invisible finish.
