There are so many different threads on the market, with different weights and composition. There is a thread to suit every project and every sewer.
Types of thread
- Cotton thread
- Elastic thread such as shirring elastic
- Polyester thread also known as all purpose thread
- Upholstery thread for heavy duty use
- Denim thread for stitching denim e.g. jeans
- Metallic thread for decorative stitching
- Silk thread for delicate stitching on silk
- Nylon and rayon thread such as invisible thread
The type of sewing thread that you use depends on your project.
Sewing thread types and their uses
- Cotton - all purpose thread used for all kinds of sewing projects.
- Polyester / cotton - this is a multi purpose thread and is suitable for all fabrics including stretch fabrics.
- Embroidery - this thread can be split into strands for embroidery. There are usually 6 strands that can be divided.
- Quilting thread - this is coated with a waxed finish that allows for easy movement through quilting layers.
- Wool thread - this is used for embroidery and blankets. there is also tapestry wool.
- Invisible thread - this is used when you want an invisible finish.
