Fabric

You can use a variety different fabrics when quilting but cotton fabrics are great to use because they tend to shrink very little, sew together well and the choice available is amazing - there's so many colours and designs.

As well as buying fabric off the bolt by the metre, you can also buy fabric packs called pre-cuts. These come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and tend to be made from one entire range of fabrics , by different designers which is a great help when choosing fabric as the colours will be co-ordinated for you.

Pre cut bundles include the Jelly roll,  Charm pack, Layer cake and many more.

Jelly rolls

Most contains forty 2½ x 44" (width of fabric) strips, although not all rolls contain 40 strips.  Other companies have  their own versions, sometimes with  less than 40 strips. Jelly rolls can be used to make simple strip quilts and are also great for hexagon patchwork.

Charm packs

Charm packs are 5 inch squares. They tend to be from a range of fabrics by different designers. These are really good as the colours are already coordinated for you. They are great for beginners to quilting as you can make simple square quilts without needing to cut them and they are also great to make simple projects like placemats and cushions.

Layer cakes

Layer cakes are 10 inch squares.

Quilters often use other cuts of fabric that are ideal for quilting and patchwork.

Fat quarters

These are quarters of a metre, but are cut differently. Fat quarters measure approximately 19" x 22" (50cm x 55cm).

Fat Eighths

A fat eighth is half a Fat Quarter and is really good for smaller projects such as  hexagons for patchwork, small pieced quilts or appliqué.
